This part always makes me nervous…

I’ve mentioned a few times before that I really struggle when it comes to adding color to my designs and illustrations.

I’m not entirely sure why.

Maybe it’s because there are SO many colors to choose from?

Maybe it’s because I’m looking at them on a screen and don’t have them physically in my hands?

Whatever the reason, the coloring step always makes me nervous. I tend to really like my line work and then ruin it with the colors.

But this time was different!

About a month ago, I created a standard palette with some of my favorite colors that I can use as a starting point. I think starting with a bit of cohesion really set me up for success.

Here is the color palette I ended up with for my upcoming collection!

I thought it turned out well. I have some cool neutrals with the blues that balance out the warmer colors.

Plus, I managed to whittle it down to only 8 colors! I started with about 15 colors and I spent time consolidating the ones that were similar or could perform similar roles.

Having a small color palette is key to keeping the collection cohesive, but it can be really hard to do when you’re working with 12 different patterns. It took me several hours to balance out the colors so that the designs complemented one another while also standing out on their own.

I won’t give too much away yet, because I plan on writing a whole series showing off the designs in the collection, but here’s a little sneak peek at a couple.

Mark your calendar, because the full collection will be released on October 7! I can’t wait to share more!
