Introducing my new shop!

Happy Sunday, friend!

It’s finally time to for me to tell you what I’ve been working on for the past month.

I mentioned in my last newsletter that, while I’ve loved connecting with customers on Spoonflower, I’m really wanting to take more ownership over the sales of my products.

More ownership means more control over what I sell and how I sell it, and it also means I receive more in return for the effort I’m putting in.

I’ve been working with a business coach for a little while now, and we both really felt like the biggest bottleneck in my business is the amount of profit I take home from each sale I make.

For example, last month I sold about $300 worth of product and took home less than 10% of that in commissions. And this isn’t even just because of the commission rate Spoonflower has set, but also because of the way they run sales and how their website is set up and functions.

I also believe that if I had more ownership over my sales process, I’d be able to create a better experience for my customers and help them actually solve their problems. I have no way of contacting people who find me on Spoonflower, so I can’t offer them assistance with things like a different color or scale they’re looking for. Very frustrating!

So with that comes the “super secret” project, which is that I’ve opened up my own shop for selling wallpaper.

I’ve run a few shops in the past and have learned a ton from them, and I’m excited to apply all of that experience to this one.

Right now I’m focused on selling my designs on wallpaper. I’ve curated some of my best sellers to focus on and I plan to release some exclusive collections there going forward. In the future, I may add additional home products like wall art or throw pillows. Please let me know what you’d like to see!

This structure will allow me to have a larger profit margin, and that’s great, but honestly the thing I’m most excited about is being able to connect with my customers again.

If all I cared about was money, I probably would have stayed at my software engineering job forever.

But it’s about so much more than that. I love getting to create. I love getting to use my creations as a bridge to connect with others. And I love the idea that we all have useful skills we can share with one another. We don’t need to be dependent on the top 5 largest corporations to have access to beautiful and useful things. We can lean on each other as a community.

Anyway, that’s all I have to share for you. If you or someone you know is looking to decorate their space this summer, feel free to come on my way! If there’s something you’re looking for that you don’t see, I’m happy to make custom changes and adjustments as well. You can visit the shop here—

I’ll be iterating on this and improving it over time, and you’ll be the first to hear about all of it!

Until next week,

~Rachel
